I took my daughter to see Up last night at our local, neighborhood theater. The theater is a chain but this one is a very small theater, it only shows two movies at a time. The building is Art Deco and the interior reflects that style.
I don’t go to that many movies in theaters anymore. The last movie I saw was Shrek and the one before that was Lion King, the first run of it. I took my niece when she was two years old. She graduates from high school tomorrow. I think I may have seen Titanic as well.
The movie house was showing Angels and Demons in the upstairs theater. Briefly, for a split second, I wondered if I could ditch my daughter and run upstairs to see a grown up movie. My parents did this to me when I was kid. They wanted to see The Sting and I wanted to see American Graffiti. We can’t do that now but back then everyone did it. In fact it may have been the reason theaters started to show more than one movie at a time.
I didn’t ditch my daughter. I took out a loan to buy popcorn and pop and then we settled in just as the trailers were ending. We went to the late afternoon showing so there was no trouble getting good seats. Well, not good seats since they were installed a hundred years ago and are covered in all sorts of stickiness but good viewing seats.
Someone brought a baby. A cranky, hungry, loud baby. If someone could explain to me why they would bring a baby to a movie I would love to hear it.
My daughter hasn’t seen too many movies in the theater but she has seen shows on TV of people watching movies. She started “shushing” immediately when we sat down so I gave her the bag of popcorn which cost more than my car payment and hoped that would shut her up.
Up is a great movie, well worth the $75 it cost me. I didn’t know anything about this movie except that the guy who wrote and directed it had some tie to Minnesota. He contributed to Monster Inc and Toy Story. I had no idea what the movie was about or who was voicing the characters. I’m not going to give away the story but it was fun to listen to Ed Asner, from The Mary Tyler Moore show and Christopher Plummer instead of the Jonas Brothers or those twins from The Suite Life of Zac and Cody lend their voices to these darling characters.
There are dogs in this movie and they talk. They talk through a collar that translates for them. So they speak as a dog would speak if it could. This alone made the movie worthwhile. I was the annoying person in the theater who snorts and laughs uncontrollably, the kind people like my daughter “shush”. I couldn’t help it, the dialog these dogs were given was pee-in-your-pants-funny and it didn’t hurt that the main dog looked like Stanley the Bassador.
The movie had a sappy ending, a message and it made me cry at the end. I would gladly see this movie again. I’d like to see it without a crying baby in the front row and certainly without my daughter “shushing” me but I would certainly sit through both of those again. It is a darling movie and if you haven’t gone to one in a while it is a sure thing. You will be entertained immensly.
You make it sound so interesting 🙂 I also will never understand why some parents take their babies into movie houses when obviously the babies cannot appreciate movies yet!
Two thoughts:
First, I am eternally grateful that mine are old enough not only to ditch, but to send alone.
Second, I’m bummed that I don’t have one young enough to go with me to movies like this.(I STILL haven’t seen Wall-E)
I want it all. Why can’t I have it all?
Vera, Aside from the babies not appreciating the movie, I know of no baby that can sit or sleep quietly for two hours at a time, especially with Surround Sound.
Mother, you can certainly see these movies on your own, or I bet there are other women who would gladly go see it with you. Craig’s List has something for everyone. Also you will have grandchildren soon enough and then you get to go to all of these movies again and you get to fill them up with sugar and then send them home to their parents. That’s having it all.
I can’t wait to see this movie, my two teens are excited to. We are going to go see it in the IMAX so yeah… we will need to take a 2nd mortgage out as well.
Thanks for the review. It is great to know that the money spent will be well worth it
Dizz, IMAX makes me car sick so I hope that goes well for you. It is a really stunning movie with regard to the details of the animation. I sold balloons for years and they “got” them perfectly, how they move, shine, lose helium and droop. I had to wonder how he filled those balloons so fast with Hi-Float (the goopy stuff that keeps them from deflating after 24 hours) otherwise a standard 11 inch balloon will only stay aloft for less than a day. Unless it is cold. His had to be up for at least three days. But that was the only fault I found with this movie. I know you will enjoy it.
On that note, I used to be the fastest balloon blower in the bunch of us. I could blow up 100 balloons in under ten minutes but that was not using hi-float. That takes much much longer.
I have heard that this is a very good movie for all ages which is a great thing in a movie. I will have to wait for NetFlix.
It sounds like you had a nice time in spite of the expense and idiocy of your fellow movie goers.
Trust me, you did NOT miss anything by not sneaking off to watch Angels and Demons.
This movie sounds cute, and I like the fact that it’s LOU GRANT doing the voice, not someone like that Everybody Loves Raymond guy. I hate that guy.
Sounds like a good flick. One question: is this a bring-a-girlfriend movie or bring-the-husband?
I have been waiting for this movie to come out for a couple of months now. I can’t wait to go see it. My kids think I’m crazy for wanting to see a movie this badly, but I thought the trailers were quite funny. I’m going to take my grandkids, and if I can’t do that, who says you have to have a kid with you to enjoy a movie?
No kidding, isn’t it ridiculous how expensive it is to go to the movies? It’s a fun treat, but it sure isn’t cheap and fun like it used to be. We have an old drive-in that used to charge by the carload. Now, they even charge per person so you pay a lot and have to listen to people honk their horn and do stupid stuff.
Pricilla, I did have a nice time. Daughter has been reciting lines from the movie ever since and it’s nice that I know what she is talking about.
JD, did it really stink? The DaVinci Code wasn’t all that good either but the books were so great. Too bad, I’ll just wait til it’s on cable.
Frogs, you could bring either but this is certainly a movie husbands would like.
Breath, I used to never go to movies alone until I tried it once when i just had to get out of the house and had nothing else to do. I love going to movies by myself. That way I can actually watch the movie.
Sherri, I keep meaning to take the kids to a drive-in, just for the experience. Ours used to charge by the car load but I think they charge per person too. It’s still a lot less than a theater if I remember correctly.
Jen, I thought the previews looked pretty good for this, but now hearing your review of it as a former balloon person yourself (meant in the nicest way possible), I know it’s a must see. Thanks for filling us all in on it.
I’ve heard good things about this movie.
Thanks for the endorsement.
This movie makes it into my all-time top 20.
And that includes such gems as ‘Jaws,’ ‘Braveheart,’ and ‘Dr. Gonzo’s 6-hour Sex-Fest Bonanza’ so you know it HAS to be good.
I’m really looking forward to this movie now. Between your good review and a million other ones I read this weekend, it sounds like a keeper.
I haven’t been to a theater in, dare I say, more than three years. Can’t stand the experience. With my fairly decent sized HD TV and not needing to see movies first run, I’m perfectly happy watching at home. Babies and theaters do NOT mix. What’s with people?
I've added this to my list, along with "Night in the Museum 2" for me and Mrs C.
