It is too damn cold outside. It is also too damn cold inside. I can’t turn the heat on enough to make it feel warm in my house. The air temperature might say 68 degrees but without any moisture in the air it still feels really cold.
For the past several days I wake up and my whole body is sore. It’s sore because I have been sleeping with my arms and legs pulled as close to my core as possible. Apparently I might relax my grip while I sleep so I hold onto my shoulders with my hands crossed over my chest. When I wake up I feel as if I have been pulling a Chevy Impala with my bare hands all night long.
Last night I kept waking up because I heard a beeping sound. I am sure it is the beeping sound that a smoke detector makes when the battery is dying. The problem is I have about seven smoke detectors and have no idea which one is making the noise. Why can’t they put some kind of visual identifier on the smoke detector when the battery starts to chirp? The first sound it makes that isn’t to alert the house to a fire makes a little dot turn green. They can do this to a cell phone there is no reason they can’t do it to a smoke detector.
Because it was so cold last night (-15) I had the daughter, dog and cat all in my bed and we were still freezing. Every time the smoke detector chirped the dog freaked out. It probably didn’t help that I was schlepping a chair to each smoke detector to see if I could see which one was making all that racket.
It has also been so cold that the dog will not go all the way outside to pee and poop. He walks about ten feet down the sidewalk and takes care of business there on the walk. Now the walk is frozen yellow with a few land mines thrown in for good measure. It’s disgusting but I can hardly blame him. At least he goes outside. If I had to do my business outside I wouldn’t.
This cold is supposed to last for at least another week. This is usually the coldest part of the year for us so after this week we should see the temperature go back to more normal reading like zero or if we are lucky 10 degrees above zero. I turned on the Today show this morning. I watched from underneath several blankets while I tried to sip my coffee. Meredith, Al and What’s-his-name were all complaining about the cold in NY. It was 20 degrees above zero! That’s like summer here. They will have spring in a normal month like March, we might get our spring in June.

Oh my dear! That truly and totally sucks. You must get yourself an electric blanket. I have mine turned up to “mother” every night.

You need to get like 15 Snuggies to keep yourself warm!
Okay, I have a few suggestions that may help.
#1. If you aren’t already using one, get an electric blanket or two. Keep one on the bed (you can turn it on before you get in bed so the covers will be nice and warm when you get in) and keep one on the couch or your favorite chair or wherever.
#2. Move to Hawaii or Florida. Hawaii is my favorite choice – summer all year round! 🙂

My smoke alarms do the same thing. The beeps are so infrequent that you are completely awake by the time you figure out where the noise is coming from. Why do the batteries always run out in the middle of the night.
Pick up a set of thermal underwear, top and bottom. Wear then by themselves as pyjamas or under pyjamas. Add a pair of cotton socks to keep your feet warm while you sleep. Another trick is to warm a grain pack that’s used for easing sore muscles and place it where you can put your feet on it in bed. It will keep the warmth for awhile too.
I’m with Jayne….an electric blanket (big enough for everyone) is the key to defrosting!!!! Don’t walk run to get one! You won’t be sorry! Swear!!!

I had my ‘it’s too cold’ rant today as well. It’s rather inhumane, but I suppose we must grin and bare it. :-). Here’s hoping the weather improves soon. Happy 2010
IJW: I have a fear of electric blankets. I also get way too hot in them.
Kristina: We have a Snuggie but it is so covered in hair I can’t bring myself to put it on. I’m also in need of one for a child since I trip all over with it on.
Surfie: I could move to Hawaii, I can’t spell it but I could live there. I like Minnesota for at least three months out of the year but I am beginning to hate the winters.
Anne: I was wondering that myself, why do they only seem to run out in the middle of the night. I had no intention of changing the battery in the middle of the night because they make a lot of noise when a battery is removed and put in. I didn’t want to wake anyone.
Garden Gnome: I wear sweats to sleep along with socks. I take off the socks in the middle of the night. With the cat, dog and daughter in the bed with me it isn’t that cold, in fact it gets pretty uncomfortable with all that heat, plus the dog smells.
MrsBlogalot: I have a heating pad, will that work?
TheAl: I hope it gets warmer soon. They say it will be another week but after that it should get a little better.
I use a down comforter and I swear by it. No top sheet, just the down comforter. I also wear sweatpants as jammies and if I’m really cold I’ll put a zip front fleece jacket over my tshirt. Also, Anastasia and I have our own comforters and we basically roll ourselves up like burritos, that way no one is stealing covers while the other freezes to death. Yes, it’s so romantic, but at least we’re not doing the tug of war all night.
Electric blanket is the way to go! You can turn it off when you get into bed but the warmth remains with you. I hate being cold! I hate being hot too, I love climate control. It was 21 here today but with the wind absolutely howling! Spring will come..Spring will come..Spring will come…

I hate when it is that cold!! There is no getting warm!!
Lola: I use a down comforter too and usually no top sheet but I don’t wash the comforter very often and that thought kinda made me think twice. I have been using a top sheet since it got really cold. Usually I use flannel sheets but I can’t find the ones that fit on my bed. The stinky dog generates a lot of heat.
Buggys: I only have two plugs near my bed and they are being used by the alarm clock and the lamp. I really don’t like electric blankets. The sleeping part isn’t where I am having trouble it is the walking around during the day in the cold.
Stephanie: You are right, there is just no getting warm when it is this cold. I suppose I could go outside every now and then just to realize how warm it really is inside but that seems irrational on some level. I’ll wait it out. Only a few more months.
It’s freezing here too. As usual, after the big storm the sky clears, the sun comes out, and it gets stupid cold because that sweet, sweet cloud cover is gone.
But I’m optimistic. 2 months until march, and when you consider the amount of time we spend inside working, sleeping, and eating, there’s really just like 2 days of winter left. So yeah, it’ll be over soon 😉

Two words: fleece sheets! The hubby finally got me a set for Christmas and they are soooooooo warm. You know how I never get warm. We could take two blankets off of the bed. It’s like sleeping in a cloud. A warm fluffy cloud.
I wear a hat from the first day it hits about 35 and it doesn’t come off until it warms up. In fact the hubby also got me a hat wardrobe this year so I have a little ski hat that goes with every color I might want to wear.
Obviously he was tired of listening to me complain about being cold…..

Ha! I actually have that photo on my fridge! That’s how I felt last winter when it was below zero for weeks on end. And that’s how I felt a couple of years ago when it snowed every Friday for 12 weeks in a row – and not just a dusting, we’re talking several feet of snow every freaking Friday – and hubby was traveling all winter long so he “missed out” on the joy of it all. He’d call me from Florida and I’d tell him where to stick it. What you need are some of these fabulous little heat packs that you can pop into the microwave and warm them up. I wear one draped over my shoulders all the time to keep me warm. My office has no heat so its freezing in here all the time. I don’t think I could live in that kind of cold. If it goes to 50 degrees here, I’m crying about how freezing it is so I can’t even imagine. Alex generates a lot of heat and so does Harry if he sleeps with us. I can’t stand electric blankets. Pray for Spring, Jen. That’s all I can say.
