As I was leaving the house yesterday I noticed what looked liked dog kibble all over the yard. I have a dog, and a child who likes to feed the dog, so it didn’t seem like an odd thing to see. Except that the kibble was still there and had not been eaten, and that it was placed within animal prints in the same spot each time.
I’m pretty sure this is squirrel poop but since I have never seen squirrel poop before I really don’t know.
I have never noticed this before in my life. I have often wondered where squirrels poop since I’ve never see it on the lawn.
Apparently, if this is squirrel poop, they like to poop in my back yard. It was everywhere once I started looking.
I was actually excited when I found this yesterday. First of all I knew right away I had a post for today, but also because I have often wondered what squirrel poop looks like. I know what rabbit poop looks like, I am very familiar with dog poop, baby poop and even cat poop. I can identify cow poop and horse poop but I have never before seen what squirrel poop looks like.
Am I the only one who has been missing this?
** UPDATE**
The general consensus, from people who know more about these kinds of things than I do, seems to be that these tracks, and the poop, are made by a rabbit and not a squirrel. I would have to agree. After spending the better part of an hour watching the squirrels in my yard I noticed a couple of things. First off they don’t leave tracks. They little buggers aren’t heavy enough to break through the snow. Secondly they don’t stop to poop.
The mystery remains…where do squirrels poop and what does it look like?

You know what, I just googled squirrel poop, thanks to you. You have made my day. You just never know what will happen each day – little surprises here and there. And today, I give you… squirrel poop. It is a banner day.
Funny, I never thought about it, even after having read “everyone poops” about a hundred times. Everyone eats, sooooo everyone poops!
We are actually gonna get SNOW tomorrow – BIG snow – and we NEVER EVER EVER get snow. Guess what I will be looking for in the snow? Squirrel poop!

Not to be a wiseguy, Jen, but have you considered “possum poop”? All that snow is simply amazing to me here in California! I have a about 3000 squirrels who live in my trees and torment my dogs. I have never seen any evidence of squirrel poop. I have always assumed the pooped in the trees. I just had a horrible thought. Since I have NEVER seen any squirrel poop, could it be that Honey and/or Harry are disposing of it on their own? I know it sounds unlikely, but then so did Harry and Honey eating a styrafoam container.

Pricilla: There is no ‘lately’ about it. Thanks, I’ll pass on the goat poop but I bet it makes great fertilizer.
Katherine: I’m so glad I made your day with my squirrel poop. I hope you get a washer soon.
Linda: We don’t have possums here in the city so it’s from them. It could be rabbit poop but it doesn’t look like rabbit poop to me and we have just as many squirrel as you. I don’t think your dogs are eating it. Stanley has been known to eat his own poop as well as the cat’s poop but he hasn’t bothered to eat the squirrel poop. He’s pretty stupid and it does look like kibble but even he has stayed away from it.
That’s interesting. It has been one hell of a poop winter. But to get to the point. I was trying to see other tracks in the snow. You would recognize the little squirrel paw prints.

Grandpy: The only thing I ever see running around in my back yard is squirrels and there is only one kind of little paw prints. There are dog prints and child prints but only one little animal. We do have rabbits but I never see them in the backyard, only the alley.
Sorry Laura, I missed you. It is cool and disgusting. I’ve never seen this on the sidewalk in the summer or on the grass for that matter but I suspect it can fall into the grass and is never seen. It doesn’t flatten the grass like dog poop does.
Looks for all the world like RABBIT tracks (and rabbit poops) to me.

I can’t say that I’ve ever seen squirrel poop either! I probably would’ve guessed that to be rabbit poop, but then again, there is typically more than one pellet when it’s a rabbit!

MsDarkstar: My neighbor tells me it is indeed rabbit poop. It doesn’t look like rabbit poop to me but then maybe domesticated rabbits have different shaped poop from their counterparts in the wild.
Stephanie: It’s something different to think about… even if it might not be squirrel poop.
Tracie: We’ve had snow since Thanksgiving and this is the first time I have seen this. My guess is if you get snow it won’t stay long enough for anyone to poop on it.
Mother: Ewwww.
Lynne: That’s exactly what I based my assumption on, and they usually look like pellets or small capsules. These are round little kibble shaped poops but my neighbor insists they are rabbit poops and he knows about this kind of stuff so I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt here.
My dog eats poop. Any poop. His, Jakes (my other dog), squirrel, possum and his favorite; racoon poop. blech.

As a resident of the woods, I believe I can attest to that being Squirrel poop. My dogs know this for sure, they like to roll in it. They aren’t particular, but I think they like the perfect pellets of deer or bunny poop better to roll in.

Girl, you have WAY too much time on your hands. If you really sit around and wonder what squirrel poop looks like I can only imagine what other exciting thoughts are going on inside that red-head – but, you DO make a good point, I wonder how many people have ever seen squirrel poop?

PeeDee: So those big slobbery kisses he gives you? Eww!
CatLady: I am pretty sure it is rabbit poo. I watched the squirrels this morning and they don’t leave track, I also didn’t see any of them take a dump.
Brandy: I’m just doing my job by pointing out the things we don’t think about enough.
Chris: My neighbor insists it is rabbit poo and he knows those kinds of things. My dog hasn’t rolled in it but the neighbor dog is rolling all over her back yard so it must be good to roll in.
Meleah: That seems to be the general consensus.
Sheila: It’s not that I have time it is that I don’t want to think about the stuff I really need to do, and I get easily distracted. But seriously, haven’t you ever wondered why we never see or talk about squirrel poop. The little rodents are all over the place and yet they leave no droppings.
Definitely not possum. I really think those are rabbit tracks. Squirrel can look similar, but it all says rabbit to me.
Interesting post and comments 🙂 We have a lot of rabbits frequenting our yard. The tracks and poo pictured is from rabbits The larger portion of the tracks is from the hind legs and the smaller portion from their front legs. I can’t recall seeing squirrel poo either but will have to look for it.

One, question…Do you enjoy living somewhere, where, poop stands out so much in January?
Peace.
I don’t know what kind of poop this is, but it’s so cute and innocent. Compare it to the huge slabs of dog poo we get in the summer, and it hardly belongs in the same category.

Sharkbytes: You are right, they appear to be rabbit tracks and poo.
Mom: I concede that they must be rabbit poops. I’m beginning to feel kinda silly.
Don: I’m not even going to admit how long I spent on that site. Very interesting and it answered a lot of unasked questions. It didn’t tell me about squirrel poop however.
JD: Cute poop! You’re still coming off your vacation aren’t you? But, you are right, it is nothing like the dog poop that needs to be maneuvered around in the summer.
Margo: I thought squirrels did hibernate but the ones here don’t. Surprisingly, since it is so damn cold.
Surfie: It’s back on the list. Now I must find out about squirrel poo. Someone on Facebook said it looked like raisins. I haven’t seen any raisins in the yard and they’d be easy to spot with all the snow.
Buggys: It’s a legitimate question. There are millions of squirrels in this country and no poo. I don’t get it. There should be mounds of it by all the trees that they nest in but there isn’t. I suppose they could poo in their nests but that just sounds so unhygienic.
Melissa: When you find it would you please send me the link?
Mike: That’s a strong statement and I am sure there are far more things repulsive and trivia. Heidi Montags surgeries is far more trivial. Anything about Gary Coleman is trivial and repulsive.
Mike: Thanks, now I’m off Whoppers too.
Katherine: Let me know what you find.
Mee2: I thought, by the title of your last post, that you would know all about poop. I’m sure you do being a mom and all. Congrats on the camera, I hope they fix it for you. What do the guinea pigs poops look like?
Ahh the adventures of POOP!!!

I don’t have to wonder what it looks like. I see it all the time in the summer. I have a peach tree that over hangs my porch and the squirrels eat my peaches and poop all over the porch. It looks just like rat poop!
