Smokey the HamsterYou might recall the bunny fiasco a while back. Fiasco probably isn’t the right word because Jack was cute and really sweet but he pooped a lot. So much that I couldn’t keep up with the poop. I also had a really had time leaving him in the cage all day. It just didn’t seem right for one animal to be locked in a cage while the other two roamed free. Of course the other two didn’t eject poop like a slot machine (every pull is a winner!). So, we found a new home for the bunny. It was heartbreaking to say the least.
Every day there were tears about how much a certain someone in the household missed Jack and how we really, really needed to get him back. I spent a great deal of my time explaining why Jack was much happier on the farm chasing chickens and pooping freely but to no avail. We needed a new pet to stop the tears.
Along comes Smokey
Smokey is awesome. Smokey likes to be in a cage and Smokey’s poos are small and don’t go shooting out of his butt like the rabbit’s did. So without further ado I introduce you to Smokey the Hamster.
That is somewhat mesmerizing…
We had a hamster once. It bit my brother and died. The hamster, not my brother.
I’m glad you clarified that.
Did your brother have rabies? Is that why the hamster died?
I think just cooties. We never knew why the hamster died. Poor hamster.
Love the video. I’m sure to them, it looks like a toy with prey inside. Confusing!
Adorable! The other pets seem to like him. I love the hamster balls that let them out of the cage so they can roam around without getting lost or making a mess. 🙂
It is really an ingenious invention. Simple but so functional and a whole lot of fun to watch.
YOU may call your hamster “Smokey” but I am pretty sure your cat’s name for the hamster is “Snack”…*grin
She is confounded by him. She realizes he is some kind of pet or family member but she spends a great deal of her day looking lovingly into his cage. I can’t wait until she can go outside and kill things in the yard.
I don’t know about the hamster, but I got dizzy just watching that.
😉
I just hope the cat and/or the dog doesn’t send that ball flying across the room one day.
The dog already sent him flying once, which was bizarre because the dog doesn’t usually play with balls. We keep a close eye on him when he is in there and the other animals are around.
That’s classic.
Someone needs to create a toddlerball. Just put your toddler in the ball and let them go, inside the house or in a fenced back yard. Think about it, they get plenty of exercise and can’t get into anything.
Oh, that would have been a wonderful thing to have when my kids were little. I could have saved so much energy chasing after them if I had them in a ball. You should patent that idea right away.
That’s a kitty torture device! I can tell yours really wishes she could figure out a way to get that morsel out of that plastic container.
Did you get that critter just to get back at your cat for disturbing your sleep?
There might be a little of that involved with the choice of the pet and
ball. Of course the joke is on me because the cat has already knocked the
hamster cage onto the floor smashing it to smithereens and giving the poor
little guy a little bloody nose. We have a new, heavy duty cage now so she
can’t get to it, and we don’t let her in the room where the cage is.
Awww, what a little cutie. I love how the cat and dog watch it. I was waiting for one of them to bat it across the floor. OMG – the tension!
Smokey is WINNING! Sure to provide hours of entertainment for the canine and feline members of the household.
He keeps the 8 year old busy so he was worth every penny of the $12.99 it cost to get him. She plays with him for hours at a time which means I don’t hear “Mom!” nearly as often as I used to. I love Smokey.
hahahahahaha! The cat and dog don’t know wtf is going on. Smokey has got a cool set of wheels.
I know! They need a ride like that at the amusement parks.
Smokey is cute! He looks bigger than my buddies Bert and Ernie the gerbils. Harley spends hours staring into Bert and Ernie’s aquarium.
Has Harley tried to get into the aquarium yet? I imagine that Harley is just trying to be a good neighbor and befriend them, not that he wants to eat them, right?
Jen, it’s a rainy Sunday morning and I just watched a hamster named Smokey roll around for a few minutes. It was strangely hypnotic. I worry about my mental health some days.
It is strangely hypnotic but in a good way. Maybe not for him but for those watching it is kinda zen in a way.
You know what I’d like to see? My cat in a cat ball, now that would be not only funny but full of all kinds of ironic justice.
Oh, Lord. I completely forgot about Hamster balls. I’m pretty sure that in elementary school, the class pet was welcome to roam throughout the room in one of those bad boys.
I really wish they made them in husband size because that would be awesome.
I don’t recall having any pets in school except for some mice and I think we
used them in biology class.
I want an animal that doesn’t poop. Well, nevermind. I think I’m going to go to KFC now. Thanks. 🙂
Hmm, do you want a chicken? This comment went completely over my head, I do not see the connection between a hamster and fried chicken at all and where does the not pooping fit in?
My hamster was in a rock opera recreation but I’m pretty sure poop shoots out of him like he’s an AK-47.
You win some, you lose some.
That rock opera was awesome and your hamster looks a lot like mine.
Very sweet. They may not poop so much, but their cage may need cleaning out a lot 😉 I had a guinni pig once and it was a lot of work in the cleaning department.
So far it’s been about a weekly thing, not nearly as bad as the bunny cage which had to be cleaned out twice a day at least and then there was still poo everywhere.
Once a week is probably about right for a little hamster. Guinni pigs are larger, and therefor do more wee and poo.
Cute. So sweet of you to get your cat and dog a pet of their very own. 😉
It does seem that way doesn’t it? The cat is far more interested in the hamster than the dog is, however the dog is totally jealous of the attention the hamster is getting.
First, you make me want to buy a Chia Pet and now a hamster!!!! I LOVE it when they roll around in those little balls:)
I am surprised at how much I enjoy the hamster in a ball. It really is fun to watch him learn how to steer the ball around the house. We just have to keep him away from the steps since they aren’t carpeted.
I’ve kept the hamster alive longer than I kept the Chia Pet alive
