Jonathan Yuhas, my local weatherman at Kare11, said this morning* that by the end of the week we could see some tulips poking through the ground.
I don’t think so.
Temps aren’t supposed to be higher than the lower 50s with most nights still reaching the 30s. It was 17 F this morning. I know a lot of you people in the rest of the country are having spring, but here in Minnesota it’s a crap shoot. Sometimes we get a spring and sometimes we go from winter to summer in one weekend. It sucks, I don’t know why I live here.
*Jonathan might have said by next week and it might rain which would make the snow melt faster. And in all fairness, I hadn’t had any coffee when I heard him talk about tulips.
*Update*
Shortly after I published this post I received an email from my esteemed Minnesota weatherman, Jonathan Yuhas, saying the following
Every year, no matter how tough the Winter, areas that face the sun all day will usually see the first tulip plants just popping through the soil. It’s not the daytime highs it’s the angle of the sun heating the soil telling those tulips to wake up. Many trees have already set buds and believe it or not things will be Springing up fast the next few weeks. Metro lawns will green up fast this year because long winter snow pack did not allow a deep frost line so we should have green lawns by April 15 and lilacs usually bloom about Mom’s Day ( early May ). Jonathan Yuhas KARE 🙂
Obviously Jonathan is not a regular reader of my blog because he felt the need to point out when Mother’s Day is (like I don’t know), though he completely redeemed himself with the use of the smiley at the end of his email. I responded to his email with this:
Could you say that on my blog?
I wasn’t dissing you, just so you know. My backyard just doesn’t look anything like Kare’s backyard. But seriously, doesn’t it help if the snow is gone first?
Jen
To which he responded:
Hi Jen – I was hoping you could copy that to your blog, for some reason my would not take on your site and no worries I did not think you were dissing me – I have been in the biz a long time and I am flattered you would quote me on your site. Yes the snow needs to be gone but you will be surprised by Thursday how much snow especially the sides facing the south is gone. JY
So you heard it here fellow Minnesotans, the snow will be almost gone by Thursday. I will be taking another picture on Thursday to compare it to today’s picture. If I can’t see my grass, or at least the dog poop (I’m not expecting those 7 ft snowpiles from shoveling to be gone), I fully expect Mr. Yuhas to stand on one leg for the duration of his forecast on Friday (I don’t really expect Jonathan to stand on one leg during his forecast, he is far too respectable to do something like that, however, Pete has been known to do some wacky things and he could always make the new guy, Jerrid, do this as some kind of hazing ritual, I’m flexible, a shout out naming my blog would be way cool too).
Now that I think about it, Bea seems like the obvious choice for the shout out since she does all web related things. I wouldn’t expect her to stand on one leg during her segment because she is only shown at her desk and you can’t see her feet, but she could link to my blog from her blog.
Maybe he was reporting from his vacation in Arizona…..
I don’t think so, our weather people have to suffer through this like the rest of us, it’s in their contracts. Jonathan is usually giving his newscast outside so he has lots of street cred as far as I am concerned.
I’ve said it before, but Spring is my lazy ass sister who’s late for everything. Then I get the blame for “sticking around” for too long.
It seems to me your sister has made an appearance everywhere but here. Please do something about that.
17F this morning?! Yeah, why do you keep living there? I couldn’t handle it. I thought it was bad in the northeast, but sister, you got it worse.
A beautiful 70 here in California, because we’re special. 😉
I can’t hear you….
One of the things I hate on Facebook: Put up a comment about how crappy your weather is and someone from California chimes in how wonderful their weather is.
Two words: Traffic jams.
Bwaha ha ha. 😉
We pay for it with earthquakes, firestorms and mudslides, but damn — at least it’s sunny. 😉
I can’t figure it out either. I suppose it is because my family is here and I know how to navigate the cities. I’m too old to learn a new city by car.
A beautiful 70 here in California because we’re special. 😉
I’m sure your size 4 ass is just loving this. And yes, you are special.
Don’t hate me because I’m tan.
It is about the same here minus the snow. Really, the snow finally subsided but we also paid a price.
For once, not missing the snow at all!
Enjoy looking for tulips : )
“It is about the same here minus the snow. ”
Um, that means you don’t have snow and thus it is not the same at all. I’m glad you don’t have snow and now I must know what price you paid? We pay in potholes.
It seems like the potholes over here are crazy huge this year. We did get more snow this year than last year but someone needs to figure out what sort of material can handle freezing and thawing without creating craters in the road.
Well, here in New Jersey it’s been pretty warm and sunny, with some major rain storms. Thankfully all of our snow is gone. And hopefully spring is right around the corner. I’m itching to play some golf.
That explains why you have been able to put on your outfit and walk around the block so many times. I tried to do that today but there is still so much snow and ice on the sidewalks that it really isn’t possible, at least not in my neighborhood.
Well, I hope that your snow goes away soon, so you too can put on your
“outfit” and go “outside”!
I don’t know about this. Talkin’ ’bout tulips when that much snow is on the ground might be grounds for a mutiny among the citizens.
Although that dude does have some fantabulous hair.
There would be mutiny but we have to be nice to our weather people because of all the tornadoes and blizzards. We need them to tell us when to go to the store to stock up on toilet paper and booze. Why do I live here?
He does have awesome hair.
I could never, ever, ever live anywhere that was that cold for so long. Or ever, actually. You should move to South Carolina. It’s spring here! I have the pollen all over my car to prove it.
Pollen all over the car sound glorious! Our winter has been way too long this year. I look forward to having pollen on my car…sort of.
That is a long old winter you have! Here in the UK we’ve had some lovely sunny (cold) days. Even our daffodils are in bloom, though they give overcast and damp tomorrow.
I love daffodils, they come up shortly after the tulips, which will be in August at this rate. I have to say I do like our sunny days even if they are cold. I don’t think I would last very long in your part of the world.
Though I love getting Mr. Yuhas’s texts every morning (‘cept weekends. What’s with that, Johnathan? The weather doesn’t get weekends off) I’m with you Jen. There is NO WAY I am going to have tulips any day soon. Seriously. I still have a pile of snow over six feet tall in my yard. Your yard has less snow than mine! Jeez.
I’m inclined to think it is just wishful thinking too but he is usually right so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt. Of course I will be taking pictures on Thursday too.
I have big piles of snow too, one of them is at least 7ft tall but it’s the snow from all the shoveling and snowblowing so I don’t expect that to be gone before July.
Minneapolis / Montreal…your yard and mine look astonishingly alike for being so far apart. And even though today was sunny and pretty warm, there’s just no way I’m seeing tulips for another month (at least!) unless I’m in a flower shop!!
Montreal? I thought you lived in Even More Canada? On a complete side note I was talking to a potential client today who was in Ottawa, I had to check the map because while I know where More Canada and OMFG Even More Canada is, I had no idea where Ottawa was (it’s in both Canada and Even More Canada). Thankfully she was Canadian and laughed at me or with me.
We have crocus here in Colorado already, but it’s been 60-75 degrees F most days, and we’ve had 50 percent less snow than normal. Even here, I think tulips are a long way off. Unless Johnathan means the lips on your face. Those might make an appearance this week, assuming you don’t get another blizzard, that is.
We’re getting a lot of rain in Northern Cali right now. Jayne is in the sun down south. It would be a hard year for a weather predictor person. Pray for tulips but plan for more snow.
Man oh man! It sucks to be you! 😉
We are in the sunny 70’s here in NC. I guess we’re special, too, Jayne! 🙂
Was outside all weekend. Got a lot of color on my face (and on my balding head, dammit!)
Why don’t y’all move down south?!
Because you talk funny down there. Don’t you have to love country music, participate in Civil War reenactments and call pop, soda?
BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN
Why American men should boycott American women
http://boycottamericanwomen.blogspot.com/
I am an American man, and I have decided to boycott American women. In a nutshell, American women are the most likely to cheat on you, to divorce you, to get fat, to steal half of your money in the divorce courts, don’t know how to cook or clean, don’t want to have children, etc. Therefore, what intelligent man would want to get involved with American women?
American women are generally immature, selfish, extremely arrogant and self-centered, mentally unstable, irresponsible, and highly unchaste. The behavior of most American women is utterly disgusting, to say the least.
This blog is my attempt to explain why I feel American women are inferior to foreign women (non-American women), and why American men should boycott American women, and date/marry only foreign (non-American) women.
BOYCOTT AMERICAN WOMEN!
I don’t think the tulips are going to be up here in northcentral Pennsylvania.
I look forward to your photo on Thursday. I’ll send you a photo of the snow still on the ground here too.
It’s been raining some, but the snow doesn’t go away.
Interesting! I, too, have my doubts when the local weatherman tells me my daffodills might be poking up in a few days — even as I look outside at the snowdrifts. But thanks to Jonathan’s explanation, I understand how it works. In fact, my daffodils ARE poking up right now, even tho the temps have been frigid. But we’re actually supposed to see warmer temps by the end of the week. CANNOT WAIT!
We know it’s spring in Massachusetts when all the homeless start popping out from under all the snow.
I love where all this is going. And I love that Jonathan is all educationy and I just learned something new that I don’t remember from school. Sun angle. Who’d a thunk it!? Also, Bea does deserve a profile page. Come on KARE, don’t you care?
Tulips? Seriously? Are you sure he lives in Minnesota?
It better be gone. I except all snow to have disappeared by my arrival on Friday. Get out the heat lamps if you must.
I think that unless you have klieg lights on in your backyard, it will NEVER stand a chance of resembling the KARE 11 Backyard. This is the way we live.
I’m just rejoicing that the herbs I’m starting inside are beginning to sprout. That’s really enough of a victory in my corner of the metro for mid-March.

I was here to investigate your brilliant use of “Secret Blogging” – I enjoyed it! Go you- thanks for the super tip!
My friend Cardiogirl taught me that. Isn’t it
fun? It’s like a whole new level to blogging.
What? What is this secret blogging to which you refer? It sounds so…..secret.
Well dang. I was gonna suggest taking the hair dryer out there to melt the snow, but now that the tulips have shown up, all I can say is yee haw!! Tulips!!
