I am so sick of winter I can’t even express myself properly. Last week we had temperatures in the 50s, it was awesome and melted a ton of snow.
Here are the before the melting took place pictures
Yes, that is dog poop. We had so much snow back in December we had to shovel out a path for the dog. The ladder is there because of the snow drift just beyond that went at least two feet over the fence. The dog walked right out of the yard but because of the drop off on the other side, he could not get back in.
There is a birdbath under that snow. It’s at least 3 feet tall, just to give you some idea of how much freaking snow there was.
That plant on the left is my lilac bush, just to the right and up a little is my above ground fire pit. Don’t worry if you can’t see it, it’s covered by the snow.
Then last week we had temperatures above freezing. It was glorious and so much of the snow melted. In reality it was just a big fucking tease but for a few days it was wonderful.
You can see my rhododendrons against the garage and you can see the birdbath.
You can see my fire pit now, something I hadn’t seen since December of 2010.
As you can imagine I was getting all excited about the snow melt. It was pointless because March is one of our snowiest months but it felt good to see some of the snow go away. In fact, by the end of the snow melt I could see grass.
And then this happened on Sunday.
You can just see the rhododendron peeking out of the snow.
The birdbath is once again covered with snow.
I guess I should be thankful, at least the poop is covered up.
We broke all kinds of records for snowfall this year. Apparently we don’t get a whole lot of snow in February so the snowstorm broke the record, and I don’t know what it was. In St. Paul we got 13.5 inches of snow but surrounding suburbs got up to 20 inches. 20 inches in one snowfall! Why the hell do I live here? I have no answer for that very good question. All I know is that this winter makes a holiday in Egypt look really good. So what if there is a little unrest, at least it isn’t snowing there.
Would someone please make it stop?

Mother Nature must have gotten dumped recently and is taking it out on us.
It’s actually menopause.
Just wait until the hot flashes hit in a few months.
So earthquakes and solar flairs? I am beginning to believe the Mayans.
Damn, and I thought I was a bitch when my ex dumped me. I got nothing on Ma Nature.
Trust me. I understand. Our first snow came in October. We didn’t see bare ground until about two weeks ago. Then the mud came. Then it snowed again. It is currently snowing. It is supposed to snow today, tomorrow and Thursday with an “arctic blast” hitting on Thursday where we will have highs of 1°. With more coming next week when it “warms up” to 15°.
I am one cold goat.
First snow in October? That is a long winter. I think ours started late this year but it has been packing a punch ever since it started. Mud doesn’t sound all that fun either.
Tease – you are so right. Yesterday I was in denial of the dropping temps and went out with a light jacket. We had some rain on top of the big melt so other than a few mini glaciers we got a brief look at the ground.
Why do so many of us live up North?
I don’t know why we live up here except for the fact that I don’t like humidity much more than I like snow and I really don’t like alligators or earthquakes.
I so know what you mean, all of our snow had melted… other then the huge piles of snow in the parking lots of businesses. And those had been bigger then a Greyhound bus so that’s to be expected. It was fantastic though and then FLUMP! more snow. I blame Snowmeiser from that animated “Santa Needs a Vacation” movie.

I blame Al Gore. I don’t really know why but it sounds good. I just saw on the news that another storm is coming this weekend. Ugh.
My (size 4) ass would freeze right off. That seriously sucks, girlfriend.
You couldn’t live here with a size 4 ass. You would die without any insulation and there isn’t much to do unless you like to ski (and we don’t have hills so you’d have to cross country ski) or fish so you would sit on your ass all day growing your ass. See, size 4 asses just don’t work here.
And I thought our 6 inches at Christmas was big. Well, it was for here, especially on Christmas. Yesterday it was 72, today it barely made it to 50. Mother Nature is fickle everywhere.
50 would be nice, 72 would be even better. Only 6 inches? I clearly live in the wrong place.
Yeah, a Christmas is nearly unheard of in the South, and 6 inches on that particular day is really something. We do get some big snowstorms, but they are few and far between. You’re welcome to join us here in the Sunny South!
I lived in Mineral Wells when I was a kid and honestly I would rather have
to shovel snow than chase the tarantulas down the driveway with a broom or
shoo the scorpions out of the linen closet like we did whenever it rained.
Ewwww! But truly we don’t have tarantulas or scorpions here. We do have mosquitos and humidity in the summer.
The snow sucks. Icicles hang like daggers from the gutters. We have a bird feeder igloo and the dog poop has fossilized beneath layers of snow. I can’t wait until the spring to remove it with a pick.
We also have dog poop fossilization going on but we will have flooding in the spring so it will all eventually seep into the soil. Which means there is no picking up with a pick or pooper scooper but it’s poop soup for several weeks.
Sorry about the 20 inches! Sometimes when I start snowing, I just can’t stop!
It’s funny though, I wrote up a post on WWFC in my defense last week and most people seem to like me. I have a lot of awesome qualities you know.
In December you are awesome, in February you aren’t. Go away.
Aw c’mon! Dontcha like my hat?
I keep watching all these reports of crazy amounts of snowfall. A week and a half ago we woke up to 2 inches of snow in VA , the next morning it was gone – I was going to write a blog post about the right way to do snow but then my daughter found a naughty video on youtube and I wrote about that instead. My mom grew up in Little Falls MN. Her mom came from a brood of 12. 3/4 of those guys now live in California. I wonder how much snow had to do with that? How do you ever get out of the house to do anything? Do you get your mail? FEDEX?
I do get out of the house because my neighbor plows out my garage and the mail is delivered to my house so it isn’t like I have go to the post office for it.
Into every life a little rain must fall.
I know, I know, you’re having snow.
Would you really rather be in the middle east? It rains shrapnel there. Ever try sledding on shrapnel?
Would I rather be in the Middle East? I don’t know, maybe not, it is crazy there but it is warmer and I bet gas is a lot cheaper.
You do get a lot of snow there, and it lasts so long! We had a second fall last week. Thankfully it all melted after a couple of days this time.
Wow! I am glad I do not live there. I love snow; I love to play in the snow; then I like to go home where there is no snow.
That photo of the trail of dog droppings in the snow is a classic. I love it!
LOL “I guess I should be thankful, at least the poop is covered up.”
That’s why I like you so. Because you are such a grateful person! Always finding the bright side!
😀
I am so with you on this, Jen, that it’s not funny. It’s just sad how much I’m with you.
Only bright spot today is that my wife had a day off from a work and the library where I work is closed, so we get a day together…yay!
Like you, I guess I have to find the silver lining in all this.
thank you for sharing ..!!
