When I purchased my new car recently one of the perks, aside from driving again, was a free three month trial of XM Radio. I hadn’t bothered to set it up until this past weekend but since I did a fair amount of driving on Saturday I thought it would be a good time to try it out.
After the initial set up it took about ten minutes for the signal from the satellite to reach my car. From that moment on I was in heaven.
I hadn’t bothered to set up the service because I really couldn’t see what I needed a billion channels for. I rarely listen to the radio when I drive because A, I don’t drive a whole lot, B, when I do drive I listen to CDs. There are plenty of radio stations around here and I have never really wanted for more variety. The only thing that has ever bothered me about the radio is that when one station plays commercials all the radio stations are playing commercials, except for NPR and I’m not a huge fan of NPR. I like my DJs yelling or doing wacky things. The soft calm tones of the NPR DJs (are they even called DJs?) is just to mellow for me. I need to stay awake when I drive and NPR just puts me to sleep.
There is a whole other world of listening out there and I haven’t even gotten to Howard Stern yet. There is a station for each decade starting in the 40s. I’m not gonna bother with that one or the station for the 50s and probably wont spend much time on the 60s either but the 70s and 80s, I’m all over those two stations.
I spent an hour listening to old Casy Kasem American Top 40s on Saturday. When I was finished driving I just drove around more so I could find out who the number one song was for the third week of March in 1974. Number two was Benny and the Jets by Elton John. Number one was some soul song I don’t remember and can’t even recall the name of the band but it was too much fun to listen to the old radio show I listened to every Sunday night during my childhood. Is Casey Kasem still alive? He is, I asked Google.
I could listen to the songs of the 70s for hours. Who doesn’t strut after hearing only the first few bars of Stayin’ Alive? No one, that’s who. The songs from the 70s may have been mostly disco and we all know disco sucked but they were fun then and even more fun now. Of course they are so much more fun now because my children become embarrassed when I start singing or dancing to these songs.
The stereo on the car was pre-programmed with 6 stations, presumably a variety for any potential customer. My car must have originated in the south however as the channels that were programmed for each button were NASCAR, Christian Rock, Christian Talk, The Moonshine Channel and the Road Kill Channel, which is all about identifying road kill and which make the best stew. There were several recipes for squirrel and turtle which I can honestly say I will never try.
My son switched all the channels right away. I now have four stations devoted to techno/electronica which is better than the metal he was listening to at the beginning of the year. I made him leave me two buttons for my 70s and 80s. The 80s station seems to only play the song Amadeus by Falco but it was a great song and they play both German and English versions so it was worthy of having its own button.
I’m sure I will tune into the Oprah Channel if for no other reason than to get updated on her vajajay. It’s been a while since I heard anything about it so maybe this week. Barbara Walters has her own show as do a slew of other celebrities. When the hell do they have time to do radio? Barbara is all over TV already, she writes books, referees fights from the women on and off the View, I don’t know how she finds the time.
I think I could learn to love XM Radio. I don’t know if I will subscribe when my three months are up but I will certainly consider it.
I suggest subscribing to XXX-M Radio.
It’s mostly moaning and shit, but well worth the subscription price if you have a long commute and some lube lying around.
Moooooooog, I’ve seen guys like you driving around with only one hand on the wheel. They always seem to have a smile on their face.
We don’t have XM radio in our Tuscon by our in-laws have it in both vehicles. When we borrow their truck to haul something DH jams out to the Big Hair Band Station! So funny!!
I finally equipped my car with XM one year during the Christmas season, when I couldn’t find even ONE station in Houston which wasn’t evangelizing in my ears.
Now I have hundreds of channels to choose from, only 2 or 3 of which do Christmas at all. It’s heaven. Or Nirvana, probably.
When we sold everything and moved into the trailer for our big adventure I bought the hubby XM. This was “in the beginning” before XM and Sirius merged. I got him XM ’cause he loved his NASCAR. That and so we could have music while driving. When you are driving across country it is very hard to get decent radio coverage.
He bought the 5 year package and it just ended so he just resigned and is installing it in the house. He loves folk music. I can live without it but that’s his era. I love my broadway music and that does run him out of the house so it does serve a dual purpose….
I had XM in my Pilot before it merged with Sirius. My 3 month free subscription somehow turned into a free year. I don’t know how, and I’m not complaining. I was hooked on the Mix station which is very similiar to a local mix stations that plays a variety of new stuff, and not so recent stuff, hence the name “mix”. I did love the 70’s and 80’s stations too.
I do miss Oprah’s vajayjay updates though.
I had XM radio, just not quite sure what happened to it ? Great, one more thing to add to my list today .. 🙂
I’ve had both XM and Sirius. Sirius is stronger on talk, especially if you are a Stern fan, want two NPRs, and are into left-wing talk radio. Music on both is now the same.
So, would you continue with it if you had to pay for it? I would be on the 80’s channel forever–I’m just waiting for giant shoulderpads and big hair to come back. Sigh.
Uh, what’s the deal with the tooth ad under your post?? Them is some Loooonnnnnggg teeth. Is that a horse?! I had a hard time concentrating on the post for the ugly long-ass teeth kept making them look at them. arrrrggghhh!
I got totally hooked and now listen to XM Online all day long while I work, too.
Beware! It’s dangerous — dangerously awesome.
I wish they had something like a DVR for the radio. I don’t know how many times I’ve missed something and I want to rewind it. Or, if I’m jammin out to a good song and I have to turn it down because I’m in the drive thru…
The comedy channels are cool. It’s hard because there are so many great ones – it’s hard to pick.
We don’t have satellite radio in this part of the world but it sounds like a good service!
Once I settle on a new station for my talk program, you could always listen to me. 🙂 And I am NOT NPR-like. Though I may not be Jen-like, either….which is not to be confused with Zen-like.
Current events, sports and the quirky side of life on my show. Having fun, treating people with respect and lots of audio satires that are clever, not bathroom.
I’m just sayin’…I could be for you! Sorry…where was I…
On this side of the business, it’s fascinating to see what’s happening, both with XM and HD radio. It was three years ago, stations coast-to-coast were grabbing up the multiple stations (hidden) next to frequencies because HD was “THE next big thing!”
HD, to date, is not THE next big thing. It’s not even the next sort-of big thing.
And XM (Sirius as well) was supposed to put “real” radio out of business. So far, it’s not happened. Satellite expanded faster than Krispy Kreme franchises moving north and discovered they had a lot more supply than demand.
Now, there’s a new thing on the scene that is going to revolutionize radio, specifically the personalities you hear. It’s called PPM – Portable People Meter.
Where radio has always had Arbitron, PPM is light-years more accurate in letting media companies and advertisers know who, exactly, the audience is truly listening to. And while it won’t necessarily affect your future XM listening once your trial is up, it may.
Happy listening!
lmao.
it’s like a cell phone, you can’t go without it once you’ve had it.
My husband has it in his car. I love deciding what decade I want to listen to, and finding the station for that.
I miss Howard Stern so I would consider subscribing to XM but my commute is only 4 minutes so it’s not really worth it.
And it has been awhile since Oprah mentioned her vajajay. Maybe it got its own book deal and is succeeding from her body.
I think Ryan Seacrest took over for Casey Kasem (sp?) but I totally get caught up in the retro stuff too. NPR does have some funny shows though, you might want to give “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” a listen, its pretty funny.
SLColman, I will totally listen to Big Hair stations.
Mother, I’m not a huge Nirvana fan though my son is. I will admit to listening to the christian channels on occasions but only to find out what they are up to and then to laugh and point at them. And I hate to admit I like one or two of the songs.
Pricilla, Broadway music and NASCAR, you two are a pair, I guess opposites do attract.
Lola, as soon as I hear an update on Oprah’s vajajay I’ll let you know about it.
Dani, yeah, occasionally I wonder where things like my internet connection and phone service go and then I remember those stacks of bills on my desk…
Jerry, I don’t care much for talk but if I had to choose it would be the right side of the fence, no Rush but some of his minions aren’t too crazy. I thought they merged?
Lin, at this point I don’t think I would continue with it but give me a month before I get completely hooked to make that decision. The tooth ads are because I posted about my daughter’s tooth, which I will be updating today so they will remain for a while longer until I talk about Mesothilioma or something else, sorry it is a horrible picture.
Susan, they have it online? is it free?
Sherri, my daughter always wants me to rewind the music. I started making cd’s for her so we could do just that, of course you have to buy the song but she only listens to about three.
XM radio sounds fantabulous…I wonder if they can put it in my jetta…but it might not be worth the nickels and dimes since my commute is 5-10 mins and I usually just pop in the ipod. I would be interested in music from the 80’s and 90’s.
Lilaphase, I like the comedy channels and for longer drives they are great. For the shorter drives there isn’t enough time to listen to the whole thing and I end up sitting in the car waiting for the segment to end…car running. Not good.
Vera, I thought satellite radio was everywhere.
CGabriel, as soon as you settle on one let me know I would love to listen and I think it is very easy to confuse Zen-like with Jen-like.
Stacie, there are so many things that are like the cell phone, something we can’t live without but not too long ago couldn’t even conceive of: microwave oven, TV, Swiffer…the list could go on and on.
Bonnie, I’m glad they only go back to the 40s.
Frogs, I haven’t listened to Howard yet, his show was occasionally funny in a “god, I can’t believe I am laughing at this sick humor” kind of way. I hope Oprah can keep her vajajay it would be a shame to not have one and I suspect it might be really weird to see it slithering down the streets of Chicago.
Vettech, I really should give NPR another try, I know they have some really good shows on there but I just never seem to think about it. My commute is non existent and even the little trips to the grocery store and such are short. I’m not in the car long enough to get into a show.
CC, I have the same problem and my commute is even shorter. I don’t think it would be worth it but the free trial is great. My car has a hook up for my iPod so I will probably just load that up with the songs I want to play, it’s just more diddling around with stuff that you don’t have to with a radio. I’m kinda getting sick of the 70s and have been more into the 80s and 90s. If I hear “Come on Eileen” one more time I might have to shoot the radio.
I got the free 90 days when I got my Saturn Vue last year. I will never go back, and i listen to it online at work as well.
Every Saturday Mrs C and I drive around listening to KK do a countdown. It’s the best! You hear all the old stories about groups and how they were discovered, plus NO COMMERCIALS!
I’m even listening now while I am online!
