Or Why I Hate Miley Cyrus and her alter ego Hannah Montana
I have a seven year old daughter who watches the Disney Channel. Hannah Montana owns the Disney Channel. If her show isn’t on they are airing a commercial for her show, or for her movie, which plays all the time.
I don’t mind the show, it’s harmless enough. Now that Billy Ray has gotten rid of that horrible hair of his, I can watch it without gagging quite so much. He still needs to shave off his soul patch.
I’m not sure what kind of message he is trying to send with that little bit of eww but it needs to go.
I don’t mind the show, I don’t have to watch it but I do have to listen to it. More specifically I have to listen to the video for Ordinary Girl every 15 minutes because Disney thinks seven year old little girls have the memory of a goldfish and must remind them often of Hannah Montana’s awesomeness.
I can’t embed the video, and that just makes me hate her even more. Sorry, if you want to see it (you don’t, trust me) you can go here.
Miley Cyrus is not an ordinary girl. On so many levels she is not, and never will be, an ordinary girl.
I’m just an ordinary Girl
Sometimes I’m Lazy, I get bored.
I get scared, I feel ignored
I feel happy, I get silly
I choke on my own words
I make wishes, I have dreams
And I still want to believe
Anything can happen in this world
for an Ordinary Girl
like you, like me
for an Ordinary Girl
like you like me
First of all she is the daughter of Mr. Achy Breaky Heart (I really wish I could embed this video). That mullet has got to be a horrible thing to live down, even if it isn’t hers, she’s related to it and that can’t be easy. So I give her credit there. Secondly, she has been in the limelight since she was a toddler and she has had her own Disney show for what …the past ten years or so. It sure seems like it’s been that long. Miley is not suffering with everyone else during this recession. If she wants to fly a jet to some far away place or buy some ugly shoes that cost thousands of dollars she can do that. I don’t begrudge her her fame and fortune, good for her for finding the key to making several million before you hit 20 years of age.
But don’t tell me you are just an ordinary girl.
When Miley Cyrus has her own seven year old daughter, and she will one day, and there is some new kid on the block whose videos and songs get played every 15 minutes and she has to listen to them because if she says her brain is going to explode if she hears that crap one more time that isn’t really being a supportive, caring and understanding kind of mom, then she can join the club of ordinary girls.
I’m just an ordinary Girl
Most times I’m Frumpy, I have chores.
I am broke, I am ignored
I feel bloated, I get moody
Surrounded by these turds
I had wishes, I had dreams
But now I don’t believe
Anything can happen in this world
for an Ordinary Girl
like you, like me
for an Ordinary Girl
like you like me
Not before.
Karma baby, it’s a bitch.
Yeah, like Jennifer Lopez was “Just Jenny from the block…” I'd like to bitch-slap them both. Personally, I'd rather hear endless renditions of Kermit the Frog singing “It's not easy being green.” At least he really was green.
And Billy needs to wash his hair.
That bit about Kermit is funny, Jayne.
I love Kermit.
But let's face it, if Miley/Hannah sang about HER reality, there would be a small, small handful of people who could relate. I TOTALLY understand your point, but I also see that trying to make someone famous like Miley/Hannah someone that her audience can relate to has merit if it sparks young ladies (or men) into believing that maybe they, an “ordinary” kid can make something of their lives.
My daughter (The Girl) wanted to be Britney Spears so badly that you could almost feel it radiating from her. Hour after hour after hour spent singing along with BritBrit in my house and (not to be harsh, but I have to tell you it's true) The Girl cannot carry a tune, even a hackney pop tune, in a bucket…
BUT…The Girl studied all of those dance moves, whilst she was singing her little off-key heart out and The Girl can dance like nobody's business.
I guess what I am saying is I can't fault Miley/Hannah/Disney for trying to help young people dream of being an “ordinary girl” who strives to do extraordinary things…
We have Disney kids here too. I'm just tired of the repetitive-ness. I've seen them all, 1700 times. I get excited when the kids find a new show to watch. Handsome (7) is getting into discovery kids. It's something new. I like that.
I know, it's like a season consists of four episodes that get replayed over and over again.
Ain't that the truth.
This is one of the upsides to being a goat and not having to watch TV
Who says teen idols are good role models? Why do we expect it of them?
But the maternal curse is SO cool. Nice job.
I don't even attempt to make the argument that teen idols are good role model, that isn't their responsibility, I just wish they wouldn't play her as much.
Can't wait for the karma train to come around and get her. Wish it would be soon…probably will be sooner than we think.
I don't want bad things to happen to Miley, I hope she takes a different road than Britney or Lindsey, and her show ends this year so I don't have to hear it for much longer. Disney will just replace her with someone just as annoying and overplayed as Miley.
I feel the same way about Miley Cyrus that I feel about Oprah. They're both living in non-reality pretending they know enough about reality to tell the rest of us how to live our lives.
I hate them.
I'm also a little jealous of their wealth and fame.
I'm just trying to be honest here.
Except at one time Oprah did live in the real world. Don't get me wrong I think she is way out of touch but she hasn't always had it so easy and she had to earn her success.
True. I guess I'm a litte too hard on Oprah. It's probably because she's never picked my book for the book of the month club. Not that I've written a book. I don't have time to write a book because I watch too much Oprah and then spend the rest of my free time criticizing her. It's an endless wheel to nowhere that I need to get off as soon as possible if I'm ever going to make anything of myself.
I know, I'm pretty upset that she retired before she picked my unwritten
(actually unedited and too afraid to shop around for rejection) book too. I
was really counting on her and now it doesn't seem worth it.
I'm going to guess that GOOP is way more offensive on the relatablility* front. I'm not willing to do any Disney channel research to confirm it, though.
*I made up a word–so what.
I'm stuck on GOOP and have no idea what you mean until I know what that means.
So that's what that thing is called — a soul patch, eh? Still hate it, but I enjoy the name.
I'd tell you what it's purpose is but this isn't an x-rated blog.
you cant say, “flavor savor” here???
Nails on a chalkboard = Miley Cyrus.
Can't help it, I'm just ordinary that way.
Nails on a chalkboard to me is Lady Gaga. She has a lot more talent but she annoys the hell out of me.
One more example of why I'm glad my kids are all grown and I'm not exposed to this stuff. I have always been a little put off by Miley Cyrus, wondering if she would have enjoyed near the success if not for her father. In my opinion, she's just not that good. I cringed when they had her on American Idol as a coach for the contestants. Give me a break! This kid is not an experienced performer with enough wisdom to advise others.
But more than that, if Miley Cyrus is the focus of the Disney Channel, I blame Disney. Have they lost their creative edge so badly they can't be as diverse as they used to be. Walt is probably rolling in his grave.
Disney has been cranking these kids out for years. Christina Aguilara. Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and I am sure a whole bunch of others I wasn't paying attention to. I'm sure Annette Funicello was just as obnoxious, along with that Gidget chick.
Yeah, but they didn't build a whole network around them. Annette had to compete with Darlene and the other Mouseketeers.
All I know is that she's 18 in November which will be marked on my calendar as “the day I don't have to feel so so dirty.”
Yay?
One of the lucky ones to have grown kids. Strange how we can't seem to get rid of Transformers, though (My sons biggest deal in the 80s). One of those that things that can't be stopped I suppose. Just like there will always be a 'New Kid(s) on the Block”.
I do have a 10 year old grand-niece who is sooooo in to the latest crap. Glad when she's at my house, but I send her up to the guest room if she wants to watch that garbage and yell at her to turn it down. Hmmm. Seems like old times.
The New Kids on the Block were horribly annoying. I can't think of anything like Hannah/Miley from when I was a kid, except maybe the chick who sang at the shopping malls….Tiffany.
All I can say is “Thank you God for not giving me daughters!”. And those are words I never thought I'd say.
Yes, teen years will be a walk in the park for you.
This is one good reason for living in the UK, and not having kids. I don't get to hear any of this, ever. I do like Achy Breaky Heart though.
Yes, if you can ignore the mullet flying around he is pretty nice to look at.
Weeeeeeeeeee!! Thank goodness I missed out on this little twit. I lived thru her father. That was enough torture.
I got to deal with the Spice Girls back when my kid was younger.
I'll take the Spice Girls over Miley ANY DAY!!
Confession….I took her to see the Spice Girls tour. And liked it. lol
The Spice Girls were just as bad except times 5 or 6. How many were there?
I swear, it never ends. iCarly and Hannah Montana and Squeenager is fifteen.
I don't really hate Miley. She's cute and has a sweet little voice. But no, she's not an ordinary girl. Billy Ray is a little slimy I think. But I might rather listen to his “achy breaky” than his daugher's “ordinary girl”.
I'd rather listen to Miley than her dad, at least the Achy Breaky song, heard that enough back then.
I can't stand Hannah Montana. I'd rather watch iCarly. Thankfully, Mikala is on a huge iCarly kick, so that's what she watches. Although, it is grating on my nerves.
We did iCarly and she has a video out too and it also get heavy airplay on Disney. Currently I am enjoying the Wizards of Waverly place, and yes, Selena Gomez also has a video out but I haven't seen it but once so far.
Damn – we have so much in Common (outside of the boobs).
As a guy – i look forward towards her “slut” phases (almost there) and then the invitable sex video.
I really hope she can bypass the slut/rehab phase.
Dang, you were right. This is a great post. She is SO not an ordinary girl – she's not even a slightly ordinary girl. I really can't stand her, never could, because she's not that great of a singer & her show is irritating at best. But all the disney channel shows are.
I really wish she'd go away now.
I would DIE if I had to watch Hannah Montana on TV or listen to any songs by Miley Cyrus!
I’ve just found your blog and I totally agree with you. Since 2009, in Hungary, where I live, we also have Disney Channel and sometimes I watch it. In the last two weeks every time I tuned in, ‘Ordinary Girl’ was on and I have the exact same thoughts like you: she isn’t an ordinary girl. She never was and never will.
I don’t know her whole discography (thank God) but I think this isn’t the first time she’s singing about this. And also in ‘Hannah Montana’, the series, this is a popular topic. Saying it over and over again won’t do it more believable…
haha, Miley is so funny! I love her.
