Summer officially begins in just a couple of weeks. If you are anything like me you aren’t the least bit prepared.
It’s been unseasonably cold here for the past month, so much that I have been confused about which season is beginning and which is ending. Just yesterday I pulled out my warm weather clothes. We went from using the furnace to using the A/C over the weekend.
I’m not ready for summer. But, I still have two weeks to prepare so I’ve made a checklist of all the things I need to do before it is officially summer.
1. Find Activities for the Kids
God knows I don’t want to entertain them so I better figure out something.
2. Grocery Shop
My kids and all their friends will be hanging around the house this summer. My grocery bill is going to skyrocket. I’m pretty sure they can eat their weight in Munchos and hot dogs each day.
3. Books
It’s time to pay those overdue library fees because there will come a day when we will have nothing else to do and I will have to drag them to the library to check out books they will never read and which I will return late.
4. Bathing suit
I’m going to have to take the kids to the pool. Does Spanx make a bathing suit?
5. Remember the windows are now open.
Summer will start out nice and mellow. We will have activities for the first day and a half. After that I have to remind myself that when I yell at them for setting the dog on fire or trying to build an indoor pool that the windows are now open and everyone can hear what I have to say.
When does school start?
Hmm. Can't you sign them up for summer school? That way you have mornings clear and they aren't hanging around eating Munchos. Or swim team. My mom used to sign us up for that every summer and then have us hang at the pool until she could pick us up. Just a thought.
My parents signed me up for the swim team too. It wasn't a bad way to spend the summer, of course the skin cancer I will be diagnosed with soon wasn't the greatest trade off.
Every day I'm glad that all my neighbors work during the day so the only ones who hear me yelling “Don't put half and half down the floor registers” are the neighborhood crack hobos and honestly, let them judge me. I don't care.
Luckily my neighbors work in the day and at night they have forgotten their windows are open too.
We go until June 25th. Isn't that like half way through the summer?
It is, we are going later too this year. It isn't helping since both of them have had enough and I am sick of having to wake them up at the crack of dawn.
When mine were younger like your daughter, I used to sign them up for local park district programs. Not terribly expensive and I seem to recall I got a break on the fees for lower income when both my exhb and I were unemployed. Now that my kids are older, I shell out big bucks for summer golf programs. Although I may be saving money this year if my son sticks with his 'I'm not a golfer' attitude. I figure that will last about as long as the time it takes my ex partner to start golfing, then he'll insist on being in a golf program because she's told him she won't golf with him if he doesn't join one. Arghh!
I'd sign them up for all that stuff but that just means I have to drive them there and root them on and all that supportive stuff. I'd rather give them the car keys and my check card.
Sounds like you've got an eventful summer ahead, I hope you find some time to relax…I fear I find myself in the same situation as you; summer is imminent, I'm going on holiday next week and I have prepared absolutely nothing! And, living in England, summer does not, by a long shot, mean sunshine and shorts – in fact, in most cases, it means the exact opposite 😀
Ahh well…let's enjoy whilst we can 🙂
That open window thing always gets me. I mean it shouldn't when I'm the one that opens the window, but….well ya know.
Me too, I open the window and then don't even think about it.
I will REJOICE when summer starts!!! WOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!
I can't wait to sleep in past 5:30 since I won't have to wake anyone up.
Im so NOT ready for the summer either. But I am very much looking forward to warm sunny weather and lots of golfing and BBQ's
Does Spanx make a bathing suit?
Yes. They do.
go here: http://www.spanx.com/category/index.jsp?categor…
Too bad they don't make bathing suits that cover your arms and legs. I had
the whole winter to get ready and I blew it off.
Full body bathing suits *might* be kind of cool.
Ummm, the model is a size 0! What the hell does she need a Spanx for? Bitch!
I'm never ready for summer but thanks for the reminder to pay my library fees. I wish my real bill collectors were as passive as they are about what I owe.
Yeah, I like the 5 cent late fee. Too bad no one else believes in something
reasonable like that.
OMG – it really is 5 cents???
It's been cold here about half the time. First I have the heater on then the air conditioner. I guess we are all having the same kind of weather. I'm ready for summer though. All my clothes are right there to enjoy. Now if it will just warm up.
Have a terrific day. 🙂
I refused to put my winter clothes away because as soon as I do that it snows. It isn't my fault this year. Last year it was. I planted my garden too early and I put my winter clothes away before May.
I wear an abaya with the veil at the pool. You should too Jen. Redheads need to be careful in the sun. Can't you just send the kids off to military camp or something? Then you can just loll around the pool with Gin and Tonics all day like I do.
I want your life.
People do question how devout I am with the gin, but hey!
Passion is a good thing.
Yes, my pet, it is!
We've had weird weather too. We are currently running the heat, but I think we're going to need A/C in a few days. Make up your stupid mind, spring!
Uh, I can eat my weight in hot dogs. My husband won't let me enter any competitive eating contests (there's one at the Allentown Fair) because he's afraid I'll win and then get my face in the paper with a hot dog hanging out of it and then he'll have to explain what it's like being married to a woman who can eat the equivalent of a pig in one sitting.
I would pay to see you in a hot dog eating contest.
It'd be worth it. I'm quite good. And I'm not one of those gross competitive eaters who sticks the buns in water first. I'm old school. And ladylike.
So you have been studying the form?
I would pay to see a hot dog hanging out of your face. In a national newspaper. That would be about 7 different kinds of awesome right there.
I am currently running the heat, but earlier had a window open. Spring is so two-faced.
We don't usually get spring so this is just weird to me.
The way to get rid of the extra kids in your house (and probably your own) is to stock only healthy snack choices (tofu, baked veggie crisps). The kids will clear out, pronto, to the home of the mom who bakes cookies and stocks cheetos.
I'm the only mom home on the block. I do stock my kitchen with that stuff.
Eventually, when they get hungry enough, they will eat it, all of it.
I am soooo ready for summer to be over. What? It hasn't started yet? Crap.
Oh, and a bathing suit with Spanx is an excellent idea.
We're going to have so much fun!
Just remember, it's 5 o'clock somewhere.
This is the first summer I am staying home with my kids…ever. I'm a little scared, but trying to remain calm. I have a week and a half to go before they are out…and already counting the days until school starts in August. Let's all pray I make it!
Two words:
Box wine.
You're welcome.
No, no school. Embrace summer, it's so fleeting!
Spanx actually does make swimsuits!!!!
I can't wait to check them out! I bet I won't be able to breathe in them but who cares, right?
What??? Seriously? *runs off to spanx.com*
the weather here has been crazy hot and cold -ac/heat…I'd open the windows too except for pollen. Who am I fooling? I don't want the neighbors to hear me yelling!
Why? Why did you have to go there? I was having such a nice day too. Somebody get me a gin and tonic!
Go visit Linda, she has a pitcher already made.
I love gin and tonics. I really do. I once smoked a raft of cigarettes for the one and only time in my life and drank six gin and tonics in a row sitting on the pier of the Baltimore Harbor. I could've fallen in a drowned, but I didn't. And I wouldn't have cared if I had.
What are library late fees these days anyway. They always seemed ridiculously low, like 5 cents. Are they more than the price of the book by now (the book that was donated to them in the first place?)
I know I'm supposed to commenting on this post, but, frankly, I'm more interested in your new masthead (the thingy at the top of your blog). I think it's very bold of you to put your photo in there. I mean, I assume it's your photo, and not Jayne's photo, or the photo of some stock photo redhead. And I don't mean it's bold because you're too ugly to put your photo up there or anything like that. It's just that so many bloggers, like me, try very hard to remain anonymous. I have noticed that many of the most successful ones, however, do not. The woman who runs Dooce.com, for example, which is probably the most successful individual blog on the planet (earning her a nod from Forbes as one of America's 20 most powerful women), plasters photos of herself and her family all over her blog. And she's relentlessly self-absorbed. Wonderful writer.
So anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent like that, but I can't help it because I have mental problems that get worse in the spring and summer.
You forgot 'Stock up on Xanax.'
I saw the comment below about Spanx swim suits. Can I get one that will cover my thighs and my flabby upper arms. Maybe I should see if I can find a tent.
