I really wanted to love Dove Beauty Refillable Deodorant, but it’s like they didn’t even try. It has everything you could want in a consumable product. And by ‘consumable’ I mean something you use over and over again until it runs out and you buy more, not because you eat it. It’s adorable, it smells nice, it’s compact, it has a slick design, it’s eco friendlier, and it saves money in the long run.
I really wanted to love the Dove Beauty Refillable Deodorant, but it was a huge disappointment. I picked it up at Target a few weeks ago and was excited for my current plastic encased deodorant to run out. It was placed at eye level, at least eye level to me, and was packaged so nicely I wondered if the designers at Apple had been scooped up by Unilever.
What isn’t there to love? A refillable case for deodorant! What’s next, refillable tubes for toothpaste? Don’t laugh, you know damn well someone is trying to figure it out.
I want to save the planet as much as the next person. That’s not really true, there are a lot of nuts out there who think the planet will die in like 9 years. I’m not one of them, but I do my part not to litter, I recycle. I try to reduce the amount of trash I put into this world. And, I like pretty things.
This Dove deodorant is beautiful. Seriously, the designers did an outstanding job on one of the most mundane products. And it’s not even like it needs to be beautiful, we all buy deodorant. Hell, there aren’t even that many different brands to choose from. Making it pretty was like shooting fish in a barrel as far as I am concerned. It helps that the product works, and Dove deodorant of any kind has never let me down.
Anyway, where was I?
Oh yes, I saw this beautiful, eco friendlier product and decided to give it a try for the tune of $14, nearly three times what a regular stick of deodorant costs, I might add.
I still had a little left in the stick I was using but figured it would reach the point where it falls off into my armpit and then into my robe any day. We all know that last 5th of the stick gets wasted because it breaks off. Maybe it’s an 8th, I’ve never really measured, but you can tell it’s going to happen when the little white nub of deodorant starts to wiggle in the plastic container. You might get one more application if you apply it more gently than usual, otherwise you’re picking it out of the rug.
I had my misgivings about the product the second I removed it from the box. The case was beautiful, it had some weight to it which was nice, but the actual product I could tell was going to fall apart pretty quickly. Watch the video below to see why.
I’ll tell you why. All the product is on top of the doohickey that attaches to the stainless steel case. It’s as if they didn’t test this product at all. I could have taken one look at this when they were story boarding it and told them it was going to break. How the hell did this get the green light?
I got one armpit deodoranted before the whole chunk fell off, landed on the rug and got filled with pet hair.
Have you ever tried picking cat hair off of deodorant? It’s gross and it doesn’t work. I was unable to put the chunk of deodorant back on to the base. The little bits of deodorant they cut out to fit into the base to hold it in place broke off. I considered – very briefly – to microwave it to heat it up and then sort of push it into the holes to make a new form to hold onto the base, but that seemed like it could go wrong in a variety of very messy ways. Thankfully, it is free of aluminum so it probably wouldn’t have caught on fire.
Here’s a suggestion for Unilever – use the same design you use for the plastic stick of deodorant, and make it stainless steel and refillable. Seriously, just make the plastic parts stainless steel and make it so you can put a new stick of deodorant in when you use it up.
This is not rocket science for Pete’s sake.
I threw mine out, I should have taken it back to Target, but I threw away the receipt and didn’t want to go through the hassle of it all. I should have known better, though I am hopeful they will take my advice and make this a real thing that actually works.
I feel exactly the same way, love the product but when it broke off it’s just a waste, I’m hoping they see these reviews and fix it quickly! Thanks for sharing I was thinking I was the only one, but i totally agree with you!
I have had the same problem; I am so disappointed. We all need to write to Dove!
Yep, the very first time I used it, the whole chunk fell off the stainless steel case and onto the floor. This is too expensive to fall apart before you even use it fully. Piece of junk!😡
SAME ISSUE HERE! I am so disappointed! It is like a bunch of men sat around a table designing this with not one single test done IRL. I also knew as soon as I opened it that it was going to break off, and IT DID. I was even extremely delicate with it! Bah, humbug.
Totally agree with you word for word. Looking at it when I opened it I thought how is this going to work? It does not. They need to recall the whole bunch and rethink the concept.
Same issue but mine was dog hair. I used it with my hand until I could get to the grocery and buy a regular stick of deodorant. The concept is great but the design is seriously flawed. Very disappointed and a waste of money. I am going to try to return it to Target, I used my RedCard so I am hoping they can find the transaction.
It is now October 14, 2021. I had the same experience as the others recounted up above: deodorant broke off from case, etc.
is anything being done by the company to reimburse us???
This just happened to me today after less than a week of use. So pissed! I had misgivings on the design after I opened it up and saw the utter lack of ‘support’ for the product but hoped for the best. I like the sustainable concept, but I’m floored by the low-to-no effort design and execution. Even by accident, did they try this thing out before green lighting production?
Reaching out to Dove/unilever because I just wasted my money & they need to change this ASAP!
Called Dove. They were polite, understanding, & apologetic and shared they are still in the start of their journey with this product. They are sending me refills. I shared some design ideas to remediate the issue using a sleeve of either biodegradable cardboard or recyclable plastic. We shall see what Dove does.
I emailed Dove’s customer service team today about the issue. I was only using it for a week and the same thing happened to me. Dove apologized for the issue and let me know they are still trying to work out the kinks. They are sending me free refills…but they will probably just break again.
I totally wanted to love it.Had it for less than a week and after like the 5th use,the deodorant broke off. What a waste!I will use it and try to finish it by holding it in my hand until it runs out.Design fail.
This just happened to me, too. I’d used it for about a week, and I bought a couple of refills because I was super excited about it. I don’t even want to call if they are just going to give me more refills…I can go ahead and waste the ones I’ve already got. Given the age of this post and the comments about folks already hearing from them directly that they are still developing the product suggests that they may not actually be working on it and will never actually do anything about it.
I had high hopes as well and i wish i had read this first. I didnt even make a full swipe and it fell off completely. Im not wiling to hold achunk of deodorant directly to put it on. What a complete waste
Broke off first use for my daughter and me. Bought starter kits and refills. Daughter was so aggravated she gave me hers. I like the product itself, but I’m applying it while holding it with my hands. I cannot get it to stay on the plastic refill base no matter how easy I apply it.
I also called Unilever by the number on the bottom of the stainless steel base. They were very nice, apologetic, forwarding my issue, and added me to their mailing list for products, samples, coupons.
I am assuming nothing will be done to address our issues with the breakage of the deodorant refills since it’s now August 2023. Same issue for 2 years it seems.
I will enjoy what I have, applying without the base. Maybe, package improvements will happen. I do like the deodorant itself, just not handling it with bare hands.
Same thing happened to me just today; it broke off and now I’m stuck with having to put it on with my fingers…yuck! Another thing I don’t like is that it feels sticky after putting it on, and with it being just a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant, it doesn’t keep my armpits from sweating! 😓 Needless to say, I’m very disappointed in this product and feel I’ve wasted my money on it! Disappointed ☹️ in Tennessee
I’ve been using the men’s version of this and the stick never broke off for me. And I’m not particularly gentle. I would have assumed they are basically the same design, but maybe not.
