I’m going to give up carbohydrates. I’m going to give up my precious carbs for a week. And I am going to document it here.
I have to. Bathing suit season is still far enough away that there might be some hope for me.
I also have to because I ate the most ginormous waffle today and I don’t think I could look at another carb for at least a week.
I realize that this means no chocolate and no bread.
It also means no wine.
I might be a little crabby.
This whole giving up of the carbs thing is definitely doing things differently, and I have vowed to do things differently even if I said I would only on a whim. There are DTD (doing things differently) police and she makes me a little nervous. If you want to try your hand at doing things differently then head over to Mommamiaculpa where Meleah (see, I am spelling it right finally, which is also doing things differently) will educate you on the whole process. Once you have familiarized yourself with the whole procedure then you can join the Facebook group for DTD. One rule, which I am breaking because I forgot and I am still too full to go back and change everything now, is that when talking about DTD you must write in the third person.
If everyone is still alive after the week, I might just do it another week.
I fully anticipate there will be wagers on how long I can last.

ZOMG!!
I am SO flippen excited for you and I will be routing for you the whole week! It’s NOT always easy to start Doing Things Differently, but I know YOU can/ will succeed! And, I promise you will feel better for it. Yanno. Eventually.
But, I definitely think staying away from Chocolate will be tougher then staying away from Bread!!
PS: The DTD Police also known as ATB will be thrilled when she reads this too!
YAY!
[And seriously, thank you SO much for the mention!]
🙂

I lost 11 pounds in 14 days giving up carbs. It was awesome. Good luck.
Have a terrific day. 🙂
Meleah: It’s okay if you swear on my blog. I’ve been living on chocolate and bread and wine since Thanksgiving. I can do without for a week.
I think.
ATB cracks me up.
Sorry it wasn’t in the third person.
I’ll work on that.
Sandee: That is just the kind of thing I NEED to hear. Thank you!
Yikes! I am WAAAAAY too fond of carbs to ever give them up. Cereal, bread, pasta, desserts, chocolate and candy… I’d die of starvation. I wouldn’t know what else to eat! Can man survive on bacon alone? Except if I ate bacon I’d probably want it with eggs and toast, or on a BLT. Man, I’m getting hungry. I need a doughnut!

I don’t know which carbs you are giving up, but I am on South Beach and have not had “bad” carbs for some time now. It really works for me. There are great resources for recipes that are amazing and don’t have the carbs. Good luck! The first few days are hard but it really does get easier.

No wine??? pffffffft. lol Actually your right. Little Meleah has been making me think a lot lately about DTD. I’m just not ready to jump in right this second. Soon though. We have this thing at work called Rock Your Body and its an 8 week weight loss contest. I’m signed up and it starts soon. So I got future change planned.
Good luck Jen, you’ll do it. 😉
And 11 lbs in 2 weeks?!?!?!?!?! Thats amazing.

Surfie: You aren’t helping! 😉
Waistingtime: I am giving up all carbs for the next week, except for those little ones in veggies and milk and stuff like that. Bread is my biggest downfall along with the chocolate but I think I am safe at least for the next week about the chocolate.
Peedee: I’ve been drinking so much green tea because I gave up my beloved Diet Coke (Diet Crack) and that is doing things differently, and it makes me pee a lot. Giving up wine won’t be much of a problem. However, I read in the Atkins book that white wine is okay since it’s clear and the carbs are alcohol carbs. However, I know myself and if I have a glass of wine it will make it really hard to resist other carbs. When the contest starts you will have to include it in DTD.
If you think of it as “giving up stuff” you’re screwed. Think of it as making a change in the way you eat. Dark chocolate that is at least 70% cocoa is good for you. You can have an ounce a day. Same with red wine. One glass a day. Both have antioxidants. Bananas are filling and give you energy. You want to cut out “white” foods, those foods that metabolize into sugar quickly – pasta, crackers, chips, cookies, potatoes, breads, etc. If you want a piece of bread, eat dark rye or a good quality multi-grain. If you want a potato, bake a sweet potato. I went down this road over a year ago. Load up on veggies and chicken, turkey, and fish. Eggs are good, too, There’s just a crap load of food you can eat. Just don’t let yourself get hungry. Kind of graze through the day. Oh, almonds and sunflower seeds. Carrot sticks dipped in hummus. Good stuff, too. Didn’t mean to run on, but seriously… you can do this.

Jayne: Thanks for all the tips. I already eat a lot of those and I know red wine and dark chocolate are good but for this week I have to get rid of them both, just to say I did it. Bread is by far my biggest temptation. Especially in the winter. Summer is easy because I live on salads but winter I just want crusty artisan bread. Cheezits are another problem but i don’t have any in the house. Thanks for the encouragement! And come back tomorrow for more, I’m going to need it.
Looking forward to seeing if anyone is still alive at week’s end!! You have more courage than I do! :o) I’m giving up sex, but haven’t told my husband.

amythebartender aka, atb.cop.dtd did NOT realize that she made jen nervous!!! now normally, amy would NOT care if she made people nervous, but since she is DTD, she actually feels a little bad that she is making jen feel that way. since there are only 2 rules to DTD, and jen is excelling at both rules, amy really hopes that jen does not feel this way for much longer!!! amy hopes that jen keeps up the good work, and she also wishes her good luck with the whole carb thing!!!
Mary: When were you planning on telling him! How funny.
atb.cop.dtd: UCMU! (I just made that one up over on the DTD Facebook page) and I am going to use it until everyone is really sick of it. That might have been just a little bit of hyperbole (about you making me nervous not about overusing a stupid acronym, I’m going to completely use it to death).
Damn, this should have been in the third person.
Now I am nervous.
The publicist could not live without carbs.
She would die.
She wishes you much luck

I lost a lot of weight about 5 years ago by giving up carbs. It came off quickly too. (Of course, I blew up like a puffer fish when I ate my first piece of bread.)
Good luck! I’ve thought about doing it again…..,
.-= Tracie´s last blog ..Dear Bloggers, =-.
Pricilla: You should try DTD, you already have the 3rd person down. Oh wait, nevermind.
Tracie: The only way I have ever lost weight has been on a low carb or no carb diet. It works wonders but I have to get all the carbs out of the house to do it. That’s a challenge when there are kids, one specifically, who won’t eat anything but carbs.
Oh boy this is going to be an interesting week. I am a die hard carb addict. Don’t know if I could do it. Maybe for a week, but only a week.. Good luck and good eating 🙂

lol ok – While I do happen to love crab (the seafood kind not the STD kind), it was supposed to say carbs obviously!
I couldn’t do it, although I’m having a taste of it (unwillingly) because my husband is cutting back on carbs. And he does most of the cooking in this house. So I eat what he eats and that’s less carbs. But I make up for the loss outside the home, and also with the junk food I keep around. Who knows, maybe you’ll motivate me. Good luck!

As a recently diagnosed diabetic, I have had to reduce my daily carb intake. For me, it’s a delicate balance between too few and too many. It ain’t easy! Anywho, good luck, you can do it!
Is this where we place wagers on whether or not you will make it a week?
😀
Ha, just kidding!

Wow – giving up Carbs – you are a brave girl – good luck with that!! I’m off to find the rest of that chocolate chip bagel I hid! 🙂
MOB: Thanks, a week is all I can commit to at this point. Though right now I’m not sure how I am going to get through the morning.
Stephanie: Thanks I need all the luck and will power I can muster. This is hard!
Kathy: I’ll let you know how it goes. Right now it sucks a lot but I am hoping after the next day or two it will be a little easier.
Nicky: I can eat cheese, thank God!
John: I have family members with diabetes and that is always at the back of my mind, actually in the forefront. Good luck to you too.
Angelia: Ye of so little faith. Yes, start your wagers. I’ve got $20 that I can make it a whole week.
Nancy: You aren’t helping either.
Giving up carbs can really mess with your head the first three days or so, but after that, it’s smooth sailing. It’s a quick way to lose those unwanted pounds. Oh, yeah, I lost just over 10 pounds last week when I had the dreaded flu, but I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Good luck!

Would you believe I am sitting here eating a bowl of pasta salad? I actually try to never eat white pasta, but it was what my daughter wanted last night, I had leftovers, and it meant a free lunch today, so there you go, carb city.
I had NO idea there were carbs in wine, OR chocolate. So I would definitely have to read up on this stuff b/4 attempting it. You are gonna be one hot mama though.
And Jen, on behalf of all of us, thank you for not writing in third person. It works really well for some – but if I saw YOU write in third person, I would think you had finally cracked. The next thing would be to have swirly moving glitter graphics in your header. I’m just SAYIN.

Margo: I think I’d rather lose ten pounds by being sick. This sucks.
Katherine: There shouldn’t be carbs in wine or chocolate. I can’t do third person very well. It confuses me.
I might be a little crabby.
do crabs have carbs (or are they fuel injected, hee hee! sorry…)
if so then you cant do that
also, if snaks have carbs then i could, um, you know, help you with that

Oh God Jen. Life without bread, chocolate and wine? Tell me at least you can have tequila and limes! If you do enough shots, you won’t care about the other stuff. (Course you kids might have to totally fend for themselves with Mom passed out for a week or so.) Good luck! I really mean that. I just don’t believe I could do it. The bread would get to me and it is the staff of life!
