Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Palette Review

Once you Kat you’ll never go back. If you haven’t tried the Kat Von D Shade & Light eye palette you’ll want to read this review of it. The Kat Von D Shade & Light eye palette is hands down, the best eyeshadow palette out there.

No fucking lie.

Eyeshadow is my thing. I don’t bother with eyebrows (I have too many as it is) and lips are usually an afterthought. Eyeshadow is the thing that I love the most. I am a eye palette whore, I have so many eyeshadow palettes I don’t think there are enough days of my life left to use it all up, and I will get more.

I never really thought much about the actual powder, however. I used Clinique eye shadow quads because they were nicely accented colors, affordable and actually came with an applicator. So what if by the end of the day most of my eyeshadow had been wiped or smudged off?

Blame it on ignorance.

I simply didn’t know what a good eyeshadow was before I tried Kat Von D eyeshadows. The Shade & Light eyeshadow palette was not my first. The first KVD eyeshadow palette I bought was the Monarch Eyeshadow Palette. I purchased it around Halloween after watching a video of Kat Von D applying eyeshadow from that palette. My coloring leant itself well to what she was doing and I did the same application for Halloween last year.

The combination of oranges and browns was particularly stunning with my eye color and red hair. I loved putting on makeup each day because of it and went from wearing mascara on the days I thought about it to doing a whole face and eyeshadow each day – and feeling wonderful because of it.

I bought the Light & Shade palette because now that I had tried one of them, I needed to have all of them. The Monarch palette is beautiful. The colors are rich and vibrant. Sometimes too vibrant for daily activities like going to the bank, picking up the kid from school and going to the doctor. I needed to use something a little more subdued so I tried the Light & Shade palette.

OMG this palette is amazing!

To look at it, the colors look almost boring. It’s a neutral palette but the pigments are so rich and deep. I’m currently in love with the colors Ludwin, Succubus, Sytry, and Latinus. I also use Lateus and Libertus to complete the look.

I use Lateus all over my eye, I might be able to use a primer instead, I just haven’t gotten around to trying. I use succubus on the outer half of my eye from the just above the crease to the lash line. I start about mid pupil but you could end the color farther out or closer in to your nose depending if you want to make your eyes seem farther apart or closer together. After that I use Sytry in the corner crease of my eye. You only need a small amount because this deep, rich color is so highly pigmented. Dip your brush in the color and then tap it off before applying because otherwise you will get too much and will have to start over again. I use Ludwin or Latinus on the inner lid and Libertus to highlight under my brow.

Blend that shit!

And then I blend, blend, blend. I’ve always blended my eyeshadow with my blush so when KVD came out with her Shade & Light blushes it was like having a prayer answered without even asking. I blend with a larger brush because I don’t want to take off pigment unevenly. Using a large brush to blend provides a soft muted, smokey look – which is what I am aiming for.

Finish it off!

I finish the look with a Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Sienna. I line only the top half of my lid ending at the outer corner. Again I blend that shit out so it’s a soft line. I love Stila because they smudge so well and then dry and don’t smudge at all.

Tip: Apply Smudge Stick liner to one eye at a time and blend or smudge before starting the other eye.

I apply black mascara to top lashes* and I’m finished.

Because I am an eyeshadow palette whore I have lots of palettes. The Kat Von D palettes are by far the best. The only other brand that even comes close is Too Faced. No primer is needed, though KVD does make one.

*I only apply eye liner and mascara to the upper lid of my eye because a wonderfully smart makeup artist once told me that to look ten years younger I should skip lining my lower lid. She was right. It makes me look a good 10 years younger by skipping my lower lid.
