It’s been one week since Donald Trump was elected as our next President of the United States. It’s still pretty unbelievable. Even more unbelievable is that not everyone is a racist. I know, it’s hard to believe, especially if you venture out into social media, but that’s the truth.
Not even half the population, the half that voted for Trump, is a racist.
Ugh, I am so sick of people making these broad, sweeping statements about how a vote for Trump was a vote for: racism, taking away LGBTQ rights, banning abortion, misogyny, etc. It wasn’t. I mean for some it may have been, only the people who voted for him know what is in their hearts (that’s the thing about our republic, our votes are private. Believe it or not, you don’t have to share it with everyone on social media. In fact, it is discouraged.
Not Everyone is a Racist
People voted for Trump for a variety of reasons and I would harken a guess that racism wasn’t even in the top ten.
People voted for Trump because they are worried about the economy, they voted for Trump because they want better jobs, and understand that free college is just a pipe dream. Even if it was fiscally responsible, just look what has happened to our public schools. They voted for Trump because they couldn’t vote for Hillary Clinton, and they voted for Trump because they are sick and tired of being called racist.
That’s the thing with throwing around any word carelessly, it loses its meaning.
Since the election there have been countless reports of racist behavior all over the country. Not all of them are real, many have been proven to be faked. Why someone would fake racism, I don’t know.
I do know I’ve seen nothing but people getting along just fine. Granted, I live in MN where it’s generally pretty liberal leaning and we’re also pretty passive aggressive. We’ll talk behind your back, and shame you on social media, but we won’t get in your face and act like jerks.
I’m hesitant to even write this post, it’s brutal out there. Even hinting at supporting Trump gets you banned, unfollowed, blocked, shamed and shunned these days.
I think things have become ridiculous, but I’m going to follow President Obama’s lead and give everyone another week to mourn the election results. It’s not been easy because every other post is about how those who voted for Trump voted in racism et al.
I agree. I mean, I can remember terms like “racist,” “misogynist,” and “fascist” being thrown around in 2012, 2008, and 2004, when the Republicans ran very different candidates. Then, this year, happened, and Democrats used the same words but had to admit they were using hyperbole those other times, comparatively speaking.
“No, but this time we’re serious!”
Although I live in the South, I’m in a big city, and I haven’t been treated any differently since last Tuesday, or at least not differently in a negative way. Some people walk up to me as though they suspect a loved one has died and asked me how I’m holding up. Haha…
Mr. Trump starts January 20. I will see what he does and react accordingly.
Yes!!! Let’s actually see how things shake out. All this panic is just wasted energy until he actually does something wrong.
It’s as meaningless as calling Trump “Hitler”, which seems to be another Thing That Is Compulsory To Do.
I am a brown male of “military age”, which makes me legally a priority target for Obama’s drones, and, for some strange reason, I’d prefer to be called names and so on than be blown to pieces. I know, I know, talking about deporting illegal immigrants with brown skin is SO MUCH more racist than murdering brown people in their own countries, right?
