I bought an iPhone last winter. Recently Apple has released its newest version with all sorts of upgrades. I like the iPhone for a lot of things but it really sucks as a phone.

The shape is wrong and there are far too many steps to take to make a call. There are at least 7 steps to take to go from turning it on or getting an active screen to finding the right program, locating the contacts page and then finding the contact and the right number in that contacts page. I can just dial the phone but again I have to go through 4 steps to get to the keypad. Because of all of these steps I can’t really talk on the phone while I am driving. At least not safely. Answering a call isn’t any easier. I like all the other things about the iPhone but honestly I rarely watch a movie or surf the net on my phone. I could if I were waiting for an appointment or something but I haven’t had that opportunity lately and when I have it figures I would have forgotten my phone.

The other issue I am having is that with ATT, the carrier I have been indentured to for over 15 years, doesn’t have any coverage on my block or at the cabin. Two places I would really like to use the phone. I have full bars at work but really shouldn’t be gabbing away on the phone there.

I stopped by the neighborhood ATT store this evening on my way home from work. I wanted to know if there was possibly a phone that got better reception. The manager said that indeed I lived in the dead zone but there were a few phones that worked better now due to the metal casing (whatever). She also told me that the new iPhone got much better reception.

I explained that the iPhone wasn’t working for me that I really wanted a flip phone that was mostly just a phone. I like all the bells and whistles but really have no need for them. She showed me a phone that was the new generation of the last phone I had.

I didn’t buy anything. If I do I have to sign another 2 year contract and I really don’t want to do that. I really want to get the monkey off my back. Not that there is anything wrong with ATT but I have been with them for so long because I keep buying new phones. I want to be free to go where ever I want.

I’m also afraid that the minute I buy a new phone a new one will come out that does the laundry and takes the kids to school. I don’t want to be stuck in a contract when that one comes out.
